- Abstract
The Pauline text of Gal. 4,21-31, played a major role in Patristic exegesis. In it, we encounter the only incidence of the term allegory in the New Testament, as well as finding a Pauline exegesis of an Old Testament text. The Alexandrian school used this passage to justify the use of allegory in the interpretation of Scripture; the people of Antioch, for their part, excused the Apostle for using this forbidden word, trying to define appropriate hermeneutic criteria. The difference between the two schools can be summarised as a problem of emphasis when it comes to establishing the superior meaning of the sacred text: in the case of Antioch this is achieved through a more disciplined and restricted interpretation, while in the Alexandrians it has a more free and open sense.
