- Abstract
The aim of the article is to analyze the character and symbolic aspects of memoirs by Lithuanian World War II exiles. The tragic period in the history of Lithuania, when thousands of people were arrested and deported to Siberia occupies a very important place in Lithuanian literature. Lithuanian exile literature - novels, diaries, letters, and essays - which tells stories about people’s experiences in exile, their homelessness, and very often death raise many problems and questions. The article describes aspects of building bridges aimed at cultural and literary integration in exile’s life. Special attention is paid to the bridge as a symbol of cultural closeness or distance among people of different nationalities living next to each other in remote areas of Siberia. The specifics of exile’s memoirs also allow to talk about the “bridge of borders” that divided free people from enslaved ones, i.e. exiles, about the “bridge of time” that existed from the very first moment of deportation to the moment of freedom. Finally, the article discusses the role of the bridge as the metaphor of dialogue.
