- Abstract
This article discusses the use of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) in the diagnosis of bladder tumors and the potential cardiovascular considerations associated with its use. While 5-ALA has improved the precision of surgical interventions by enhancing visual guidance through fluorescence, it has also been observed to cause a decrease in blood pressure during administration. This decrease in blood pressure can lead to intraoperative hypotension, which poses a risk to vital organs. The study suggests that a thorough preoperative assessment of patients, including monitoring changes in blood pressure, can help predict the likelihood of hypotensive events. The authors also propose evaluating mean arterial pressure (MAP) noninvasively prior to entering the operating room to minimize potential bias. Collaboration among urologists, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals is necessary to balance the diagnostic advantages of 5-ALA with patient safety. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms of 5-ALA-induced hypotension and refine protocols for patient selection and monitoring.
