- Abstract
Subsidizing the mechanization of small farming has been hindered by infrastructural, administrative and financial barriers. To identify feasible options for the Brazilian Amazon, this paper confronts the experience of Asian and African countries and as well France with field research carried out in Northwestern Mato Grosso. In the latter, two types of subsidized mechanization were identified, the provision of the service by the municipal government and the lending, by the latter, of tractors to be temporarily managed by grassroots organizations. Although the potential of such alternatives for family farming has been attested, implementation issues have also been detected. These comprised tractor shortage, unavailability of funds for maintenance and larger cost of the associative modality. As ways forward, it is recommended (i) increasing the public budget allocated to technical assistance and rural extension, aiming to strengthen grassroots organizations financially and administratively, (ii) focusing the subsidy in the associative modality whenever possible, but also in repair and maintenance services and (iii) an option, by smallholders, between twowheel and four-wheel tractors, based on financial feasibility and not on subjective preferences.
