- Abstract
This article reports on pesticide trials at Kent, England to study the control of cabbage root fly on cabbages. The summer cabbage cultivar Syston Early was raised under glass and planted out 18 in. apart in 28-in. rows on 14 April 1965. Plants in the "seedbed spray" treatment were sprayed on 30 March in the glasshouse, and field drenches were applied the day after planting out. The highest yields were obtained from the seedbed drench treatments, but these cannot be directly compared with the others because the plants were obtained from a different source; however, among themselves they seem to be of the same order. Of the other treatments, dieldrin and trichloronate drenches, and the chlorfenvinphos dip gave some yield increases. With root fly control, the root assessments showed that field drenches were better than seedbed drenches and dips. By 20 June only the trichloronate seemed to be exerting any control. The relative heart diameter of the saleable hearts, exceeding 6 cm in diameter, was increased by about one-seventh by chlorfenvinphos and trichloronate, but not by dieldrin.
