- Abstract
Diseases of the circulatory system are the main responsible for deaths in nearly every country and present relationship with the living conditions of populations. The study aims to describe the spatial distribution of mortality from ischemic heart disease (IHD) and cerebrovascular disease (CVD) in relation to the socio-environmental and health contexts in a deployment area of a large industrial development project. Average rates of mortality from IHD and CVD were calculated and mapped. A Poisson regression model was used to assess the association between IHD and CVD mortality and indicators of environmental, demographic and health conditions. Areas south and northwest of the project's area of influence have been identified as having the greatest risk of death from IHD and CVD between 2008 and 2012. In the multivariate analysis, only the variables proportion of residents with higher income and distance between households and health units showed statistically significant and direct association with mortality from CVD. The spatial distribution and the associations found indicate that the resident populations in remote locations to urban centers have higher mortality rates from IHD and CVD and that, at least for CVD, this might be related to rural contexts where the residences are located and the geographic distance of those populations to health services, hindering access to health services. The direct association with income component suggests that differentiated patterns of consumption and lifestyle may be negatively influencing CVD mortality, or the finding may be related to the possibly older resident population. There is a need to develop actions for providing greater breadth in health care as well as actions of health education, with the aim of reducing morbid cardiovascular events in those populations.
