- Abstract
Hospital work often requires coping with some of the most stressful situations found in any workplace. Nursing provides a wide range of potential workplace stressors as it is a profession that requires a high level of skill, team working in a variety of situations and provision of 24- hour delivery of care. This paper is a comparative study on stressors and stress busters among nurses in private and public hospitals in the city of Mumbai. A structured questionnaire was developed by categorizing the various stressors under the following headings of Administrative, Patient related and work environment. The research also had questions on personal traits of the nurses and stress busters of the nurses. The questionnaire was administered through a personal interview. A sample of 175 nursing professionals, which comprised of 105 nurses from 5 government hospitals and 70 nurses from 5 private hospitals, was used for the data collection. Improper behavior of patient's friends and relatives (50%), Interpersonal relations (40%) and Low pay scale (31.4%) were the 3 major stressors for nurses in private hospitals. Poor quality of infrastructure (57.1%), Number of patients handled every day (48.6%) and Number of working hours in a day (21%) were 3 major stressors for nurses in public hospitals. The major stress busters for nurses were spending time with the family followed by watching television and social gatherings /meetings. Hospital administrations need to look at ways to reduce the stress among nurses as in services such as hospitals the service; the service provider and the consumer are inseparable during the service process. This paper gives some suggestion which hospitals may consider to reduce the stress among nurse.
