- Abstract
This article discusses the book "Patriarch Dioscorus of Alexandria: The Last Pharaoh and Ecclesiastical Politics in the Later Roman Empire" by Volker L. Menze. The book challenges previous scholarship that portrayed Dioscorus as the mastermind behind the Second Council of Ephesus and offers a different perspective on his role. Menze argues that Dioscorus was chosen as patriarch of Alexandria for his management skills, not his theological reputation, and that he was primarily executing the emperor's agenda. The article praises the book for its analysis of imperial agendas and internal ecclesiastical power struggles in explaining Dioscorus's downfall.
