- Abstract
The article presents a literary and film criticism of the depiction of female secretaries and office social conditions of the early 20th century, particularly through the novel "Skyscraper," by Faith Baldwin and its film adaptation "Skyscraper Souls." An overview of the plot and an analysis of the primary metaphors and themes of modernity and trust are also provided. Topics include the works' response to the U.S. Great Depression and its symbolic financial and sexual excesses.
