Hutchings, "A new class of Cu/ZnO catalysts derived from zincian georgeite precursors prepared by co-precipitation", Chemical Science, 2017, B 8 b , 2436-2447. In 1999 Spencer published a paper entitled "The role of zinc oxide in Cu/ZnO catalysts for methanol synthesis and the water-gas shift reaction" in which he reiterated the initial formation of zincian malachite and other Cu/Zn hydroxycarbonates is essential for the later production of small, stable copper crystallites in the operating catalyst [[36]]. Again it was George Bridger's Group which included Phineas Davies[7] that developed two important Cu/ZnO/Al SB 2 sb O SB 3 sb catalysts: low temperature water gas shift catalyst which maximises hydrogen obtained from synthesis gas in ammonia and hydrogen plants, and the low temperature methanol synthesis catalyst that gave high yields of purer methanol than previously available from the high temperature process using ZnO/Cr SB 2 sb O SB 3 sb catalyst. With the passing of Spencer on 3 April 2020 the catalysis community lost a much liked knowledgeable friend especially those from his time at Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) at Billingham in the North East of England and during his academic career at Cardiff University in Wales.
