- Abstract
This article utilizes financial theory to develop a risk/return-based conceptualization of compensation systems that complement compensation theory and practice. The proposed framework extends the conventional characterization of compensation by providing a series of propositions, which delineate the combined and interrelated effects among separate and conventional pay subcontracts, including pay level, form and mix. The efficient frontier of risky assets provide the basis for introducing a 'pay arc,' which illustrates the risk and return of potential pay system design.
