- Abstract
This article provides an overview of the articles found in the March 1994 issue of "Benefits Quarterly." In the first article, Susan A. Stark discusses how to effectively communicate a severance pay policy in the U.S., including a review of specific areas that the severance pay should be addressed and the provision to be communicated in the summary plan description. The next article examines the effect of the National Labor Relations Act on employee involvement in workplace decision making and discusses what employers should consider in designing these committees so as to avoid any unintended consequences for their company. One of the major problems confronting the country is the budget deficits of the federal government. Moreover, it is often thought that the size of the federal deficit is significantly understated by a "smoke-and-mirrors" conceptualization. And so Robert J. Myer in his article analyzes the role of Social Security in this process and documents the significant role of the OASDI and Medicare programs in financing the deficits. Another article analyzes the relative financial consequences of retiring at age 70 instead of age 65. The author constructs a model to consider the alternative of retiring at age 65 but not annuitizing until age 70. The succeeding articles evaluate the country's health promotion programs and public pension funds. Jean M. McEnergy and Denise Tanguay Hoyer in the last article, examines the benefits that may be of interest to employees and how the provision of support for families may influence employee attitudes and behavior.
