- Abstract
The quest for defining the characteristics of the ideal leader or the mechanism of how leadership should be functioning has been going on ever since humans consciously endeavoured to increase the efficiency of groups and the efficacy of their leaders. The contingencialist approach -stating that the style and toolset of a leader should match the maturity and expectation of his/her employees - or the notion of transformational leadership - encouraging leaders to influence their subordinates on a much deeper than cognitive level, namely on that of values - are offering new solutions for these problems. There are various industries, where these new managerial approaches do not prevail, or their acceptance lags far behind. Construction industry is one of them. Present article endeavours to investigate the perceived role expectation of the leaders in Hungarian construction companies and look into their adequacy. The paper also investigates the notion of 'ideal leadership' from the employees' point of view.
