- Abstract
Introduction: The formation of foramen tympanicum occurs during early postnatal life. Failure of the tubers fusion of the tympanic portion leads to a defect in the anteroinferior wall of the external acoustic meatus This study aimed to investigate the incidence of foramen tympanicum (Huschke) in the North East population of Iran. Material and method: This study was conducted on CT images from HIS of North Khorasan province, Iran and dry skulls. A total of Forty dry skulls and 199 computed tomography images were examined. Results: Foramen tympanicum was only observed in one skull (male) on the left side (1.8%). Images examination results showed that 10.55% (n=21) had foramen tympanicum. 38% of the individuals with foramen tympanicum were female (n=8). 62% (n=13) with foramen tympanicum were male.76.19% had unilateral foramen tympanicum (n=16) and 23.1% had bilateral foramen tympanicum. The mean axial diameter in bilateral cases for the right sides was 3.92±1.42 mm and 3.49±1.12 mm for the left side (p>0.05). The prevalence of FT showed no significant difference between males and females (p=0.99). The chi-square test showed that the prevalence of FT on the right side is higher than on the left (p=0.008) while on the left side FT prevalence was higher in females (p<0.001). Conclusions: The results of this study showed that the prevalence of FT in CT imaging is the same as in a cadaveric study. Additionally, our results showed that the frequency of the FT is equal in both sexes.
