- Abstract
The article offers an historical account of the funding of political parties in the history of the Italian Republic, with a special focus on transparency issues. Indeed, transparency became the main tool to prevent corruption and to guarantee auditing of public resources in the political representation field (political parties). The article highlights how transparency have been realized, since the first legislator's interventions, mainly through the publicity of political parties financial accounts (especially in case of public funding) as well as the traceability of private funding. Analyzing the ‘90s legislative evolution – mainly focused on the refunds for election campaigns – and pointing out the fragmentary nature of the normative framework, the Author examines the most recent reforms in XVI and XVII Parliamentary terms. Those law reforms have been the first to set up a connection between public funding and the rules of democracy inside each political party's structure and organization.
