- Abstract
Economic expansion has fostered urbanization in developing countries. Communities encountering rapid urbanization have a significant impact on the local climate and environment due to urban heat island (UHI). In this context, literature considers land use/land cover (LULC) dynamics either in the urban area or the peri-urban area alone or the analysis is done for the entire metropolitan city. In this research, the effects of LULC dynamics on land surface temperature (LST) in urban and peri-urban regions are carried out separately using remote sensing techniques. Landsat imageries were used for LULC classification, and LST was retrieved from the thermal bands to understand the impact of LULC on UHI using overlay analysis. The results show that the peri-urban area of CMA has been converted from predominantly an agricultural area (45.84%) in 1988 to a built-up area (44.16%) in 2017, while the urban area of CMA was primarily built-up (51.60%) from 1988 onwards. The urban area of CMA (97%) was found to have UHI in the category of 0.4–0.8 in the summer of 2017. The percentage of peri-urban area in the range of 0.6 to 0.8 has increased from 56.45 to 73.72%, mainly due to agricultural/fallow land conversion to built-up areas. UHI greater than 0.8 observed in the peri-urban area primarily was due to the transformation of natural resources land to built-up or dump yard between 1998 and 2017. The research again reiterates the importance of natural resources like marshland, water bodies, and forests in maintaining the area's local climate.
