- Abstract
The study looks deep into the social uprising in Makkah Almokaramah during the second Ottoman rule of Hejaz, 1256-1334 A.H./1840-1916 A.D. from the perception of the local historical sources, which mostly coincided with the events. The study focuses on the causes led to the uprisings and their results on the political and social life in Makkah itself and on the political and social life of the Hejaz region in general. This period of time have witnessed a major administrative changes by the Ottoman central government in Istanbul, where the government changed the statue of the Hejaz from a semi-independent region into a completely controlled Ottoman region like other regions of the empire. That change led to a major conflict between the Ottoman governor (Vali) and the Shareef of Makkah. Both the governor and the Shareef tried to use the situation by provoking the inhabitants of Makkah against either the Shareefiat or the Ottoman government. The study examines in depth the three major social uprisings in Makkah during that period, the "Slave Prohibition" 1272 A.H./ 1855 A.D. and the "Hawa Uprising" 1288 A.H./ 1871 A.D. and the "Qobory Uprising" 1328 A.H./ 1908 A.D. by analyzing the local historical sources, which recorded the events and will compared it with other historical sources especially the Ottoman government's accounts.
