- Abstract
The article discusses the increasing risk of tropical diseases in Europe due to factors such as globalization, environmental change, and social and demographic factors. It highlights specific cases of tropical diseases, such as West Nile fever, dengue, chikungunya, and Plasmodium vivax transmission, that have occurred in Europe in recent years. The article emphasizes the importance of monitoring environmental conditions as a way to anticipate and forecast outbreaks of infectious diseases. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has developed the European Environment and Epidemiology (E3) Network, which aims to monitor environmental conditions related to infectious disease threats and provide data and analysis to support public health action. The E3 Geoportal, to be launched in 2013, will facilitate data exchanges and collaborations between EU Member States, researchers, and other interested parties. The article concludes by stating that the E3 Network can significantly enhance preparedness and response to emerging infectious diseases in Europe.
