- Abstract
This article discusses the Lumbee Indian dialect and examines the effects it has on the development of ethnic identity. A conversation demonstrating the Lumbee dialect is presented and heuristic inquiry is used as a means to understanding the effects of the dialect on ethnic identity. The experience of being a Lumbee Indian living in Robeson County, North Carolina is described and the social and environmental conditions in the county are examined. The ethnic identity of the Lumbee Indians is explored and a brief history of their language is also presented.
