- Title
Caring for patients with lower extremity artery disease: going beyond stents and bypass grafts.
- Authors
Aboyans, Victor; Carlo, Marco De
- Abstract
The article discusses the disparities in mortality rates between patients with lower extremity artery disease (LEAD) and coronary artery disease (CAD) who undergo revascularization procedures. The study found that patients with LEAD had higher mortality rates compared to those with CAD, even after adjusting for various factors. The authors attribute these differences to clinical and social vulnerabilities, as well as lower prescription rates of cardioprotective medications for LEAD patients. The article emphasizes the need for a holistic approach to healthcare for LEAD patients, including multidisciplinary teams and interventions to address non-cardiovascular conditions such as cancer, malnutrition, and depression.
