- Title
"I will never forget what you did for me during the war": Rescuer - Rescuee Relationships in the Light of Postwar Correspondence in Poland, 1945-1949.
- Authors
Michlic, Joanna B.
- Abstract
The article discusses relations between Polish rescuers of Jews during the Holocaust and those they rescued in light of letters between these groups. It is said that pre-1989 accounts were influenced by Polish government denial of anti-Semitism in Polish society and attempts to portray all Poles as sympathetic to Holocaust victims. Topics include the work of the Jewish organization Komitet Pomocy Polakom (Committee for Assistance to Poles) in recognizing rescuers, the hostility of fellow Poles toward Christians who had rescued Jews, and requests by rescuers for financial assistance after the war.
