- Abstract
The use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in war zones is well documented. CIEDETS leverages comprehensive data and knowledge models that capture information on IEDs, sensor systems, platforms, missions, environments, and emplacement scenarios to derive a probability of detect for a threat by a specified sensor system used on a specified mission. CIEDETS may be used to evaluate and recommend best practices for deployed sensor assets for countering IEDs during mission or event planning. CIEDETS compresses the testing and acquisition process of new sensor systems used for IED detection. The Common IED Exploitation Target Set (CIEDETS) framework was originally developed as a counter-insurgency software tool for the test and evaluation community to combat an adaptable adversary with a 30-day innovation cycle. Given the accelerated plan for the integration of civil unmanned aerial systems into the national airspace, CIEDETS has additional law enforcement applications. This article provides a CIEDETS technology update and overview of possible new directions, including homeland security applications.
