Stability in Parliamentary Regimes: The Italian Case.
- Authors
Pelizzo, Riccardo; Cooper, Joseph
- Abstract
The article distinguishes between legislative stability from government stability with a focus on the Italian case. It is argued that the character of the relationship that exists between these two is a complex one in which various combinations are possible. It is indicated by the findings that the relationship between legislative and government stability in Italy is best seen as curvilinear. It is concluded that the legislative stability should not be treated simply as a secondary or derivative effect of government stability. It is added that Italy could serve as a benchmark for further study of the nature and determinants of the relationship which exists between the two in other parliamentary systems.
