- Title
What drives the 'sick note culture' in the UK?
- Authors
Khan, Nada
- Abstract
The article discusses the issue of excessive sickness absence in the UK and the perception of a "sick note culture" by the Prime Minister. It explores the history and purpose of fit notes, which were introduced to empower patients to return to work with adjustments. The article also highlights the challenges faced by GPs in their role as gatekeepers to sickness certification and the potential changes being considered, such as transferring the responsibility to specialist occupational health professionals. It emphasizes the importance of effective communication between employees, GPs, and employers, as well as the need for a multidisciplinary approach to address long-term sickness absence. The article concludes by suggesting that the root causes of sickness absence should be addressed rather than solely focusing on how fit notes are issued.
