- Abstract
The article discusses the 1803 blockade of North Africa's Barbary Coast, more specifically the bay of the area now known as Tripoli, Libya, by U.S. Naval forces led by Commodore Edward Preble aboard the frigate Constitution during the Tripolitan War, also known as the First Barbary War. It considers the international legal ramifications of the blockade and the search and seizure of ships as prizes after they were captured trying to avoid the blockade. An overview of naval operations during the war is presented. Topics include the administration of U.S. President Thomas Jefferson, Commodore Richard Dale, Commodore Richard V. Morris
