The article reports on the construction of a tunneled route under Seattle, Washington by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to replace the existing State Route 99 which is also known as the Alaskan Way Viaduct (AWV). Topics discussed include features of the AWV, the guiding principles developed by WSDOT for the viaduct replacement, and the significance of urban infrastructure project planning in designing and configuring tunnel alignment.
