- Title
Between Pindar and Sappho: Horace Odes 4.2.9-12.
- Authors
Phillips, Tom
- Abstract
The article discusses the use of metrical stanzas by Greek lyric poets Pindar and Sappho, and their influence in Horace's work "Odes," a collection of Latin lyric poems. The author explains that Horace's use of metrically identical structures in different poems is a deliberate attempt to express himself in the "recusatio" style, applying both sapphics and Pindaric language for his own purpose. The use of repetitive metrical forms aids in the interaction between meter and subject matter.
