- Title
Tighten regulations on deep-sea mining.
- Authors
Van Dover, Cindy Lee
- Abstract
In this article, the author discusses the regulations on deep-sea mineral exploration and extraction. She notes that policies regulating human activities in deep seas, which have hydrothermal vents which support bacteria that use chemicals in the vent fluids to generate cellular energy, could be arbitrary and inconsistent. She cites that there is a need to defer wholesale commercial mining because there is no strategy in place to assess the impacts of mining and restore habitats in the deep sea.
