- Title
Asteroids: Spun in the sun.
- Authors
Bottke, William F.
- Abstract
The article discusses the asteroid (1862) Apollo that has increased its rate of rotation over the last 25 years. Research also shows that asteroid (54509) 2000 PH5 is also spinning. The cause for their spinning seems to be sunlight, due to the Yarkovsky-OKeefe-Radzievskii-Paddack (YORP) effect. This YORP is the torque produced when sunlight reflects from the surface of an asteroid. The article also presents that this study can help understanding the dynamics and evolution of the asteroid belt.
