- Abstract
This article charts the reception of Blaise Pascal's work in Dutch literature in the period 1800-2020, particularly his Pensées. Drawing on the work of Willem Bilderdijk, Rhijnvis Feith, Allard Pierson, C. Rijnsdorp, B.J. Gerretson, J.A. Rispens, Menno ter Braak and Willem Jan Otten, it becomes clear that Pascal's work has been ever-present throughout time, as a voice in the margins. Notions associated with Pascal's work in literature include authenticity, tragic sense of life, lostness, agony, crisis of certainties.
