- Abstract
Resulting from the question about the value of elite-sports for society the article brings the role model function concerning the conveying of values through top athletes into focus. To answer the main research question which determines the constellations and conditions of successful conveying of values, theoretical perspectives (Bandura, Kohlberg) are discussed in regard to the significance of role models for the conveying of values in general and particularly in sports. The educational potential of competitive sport can be tracked back to the fundamental idea of Olympic education. This puts an emphasis on the field of tension between the pursuit of excellence and fair-play commitment, but it is doubtful regarding the empirical evidence that athletes in elitesports do serve as role models in this context. The survey takes sociodemographic conditions for the selection of role-models and value orientations into view. The result that performance-values and social-values appear to stand in an ambivalent relationship leads to pedagogical consequences which relativize the potential of the conveying of values through top athletes as role-models.
