- Abstract
In order to further obtain high-performance ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) materials, halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were modified with potassium acetate to prepare hybrid HNTs. UHMWPE/HNTs nanocomposites with different content of modified HNTs were prepared by melt mixing and molding. The effects of modifiers on the structure of HNTs and the effects of modified HNTs on the mechanical properties and thermal stability of composites were studied. The results show that potassium acetate increases the interlayer spacing of HNTs and weakens the intramolecular force. When the amount of modified HNTs is 3 g, the tensile strength of the composite is the largest, which is 25.5 MPa. When the amount of modified HNTs is 5 g, the elongation at break and impact strength of the composites are decreased by 20% and 3.3%, respectively, compared with those without HNTs. The flexural strength and Vicat softening point are increased by 1 MPa and 3.5 ℃, respectively, compared with those without HNTs. The addition of modified HNTs improves the thermal stability and some mechanical properties of UHMWPE.
