- Abstract
This paper reports on part of a larger study that sought to explore how queer secondary students from the Otago region of New Zealand perceived their schooling environment. Focus group discussions were held with 10 school-aged students (14-18 years-old) who had self-identified as queer or questioning. This study, conducted through a process of queering research, sought to provide students with the opportunity to express for themselves how they experience heteronormative secondary schooling and how this impacts on how they see teachers and teaching. These students report that teasing and homophobia are issues for them. It would seem that school-based initiatives to counter physical bullying have made improvements as none of these students believed physical bullying was a concern in their schools. The implications from this study support research that queer student perceptions of their own self-identity depends on many factors, of which, sexuality is but one of many.
