- Abstract
This document seeks to explain the relationship between the banking intermediation margin and the concentration of the Colombian sector, based on the hypothesis that greater concentration leads banks to have a greater difference between the placement rate and the capture rate. Concentration is measured with the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index of the country's banking assets, deducing that between 2000 and 2010 it grew significantly due to bank mergers and acquisitions, and from that year on it tended to stabilize. To clearly demonstrate the relationship, an ARDL model is estimated, and long-term positive effects are obtained from bank concentration, inflation, variation in real GDP and the reserve rate over the interest rate differential.
