- Abstract
A large group of painters at work in the new gallery of Palazzo Buonaccorsi comes from Bologna: Marcantonio Franceschini, Giuseppe Gambarini and Giovan Gioseffo dal Sole with the pupil Giovanni Giorgi participate in the decorative canvas cycle in the gallery from 1713 to 1717. Starting from the first important theoretical frameworks (Miller 1963, Prete 2002), which established the authorship of the paintings and clarified some circumstances of commissioning, the paper aims to reflect on the decorative typologies used by the painters in connection to the contemporary Bolognese artistic experiences, showing some figurative models, taste factors and trends behind individual interventions. Some new documentary evidences are founded, and it is possibile to explain the work of the artists in a more specific way. The paper reveal implications that include the Buonaccorsi gallery in the cultural context of early eighteenth-century Bologna.
