I Bifolchi e l'eucarestia. La cappella maggiore della chiesa di Santa Maria delle Vergini a Macerata.
- Authors
Canullo, Giacomo
- Abstract
The chapel, whose patrons were the "Bifolchi", a civic confraternity of farmers, represents an almost unique case of artistic workshop in the Marche region during the age of Counter-Reformation, mainly due to its complexity and excellent state of preservation. The decoration of this chapel was initially commissioned to the painter Gaspare Gasparrini from Macerata: after his death, it was entrusted to the brothers Cesare and Vincenzo Conti, Marchisan painters who had been working in the roman workshops during the papacy of Sixtus V. The chapel houses a painting depicting The Last Supper and frescos of episodes from the Old Testament; these scenes are connected with the theme of the Eucharist, intending to illustrate and underline through particular iconographic expedients the doctrines reaffirmed by the Council of Trento.
