- Abstract
The article describes the epizootic occurrence of rhabdomyoma in trunk or tail musculature of ayu and the histological appearances of the two kinds of tumours in freshwater fishes of Japan. The ayu is an anadromous fish with a one-year lifespan and is among the most highly-prized food and game freshwater fishes of Japan. Hatchery-rearing techniques have been established and many rivers arc stocked with reared young fish. The involvement of infectious agents in the aetiology of the tumours was considered possible since lesions occurred in only two of the 47 ponds. However, electron microscopy of material from three of the rhabdomyomas did not reveal any virus-like particles. A further possibility is the involvement of one or more of the chemotherapeutants routinely used in ayu-culture in Japan.
