- Abstract
The article presents an examination into the history of poor white women in Savannah, Georgia during the first half of the 19th century. Examination is given to the primary economic strategies for survival used by impoverished white women during the period, including appeals to charity, marriage, employment and crime. Each form is discussed in turn. Additional commentary is offered regarding the extent to which historical source material illustrates and confirms the prevalence, distinct characteristics and efficacy of each method.
