- Authors
Marritt, Stephen
- Abstract
The article focuses on the three papal letters issued between 1156 and 1176 to the Ridale family regarding their land holdings in Scotland and North Riding of Yorkshire, England. The letters are held by their descendants, the Riddells of Whitefield, Hepple, Northumberland, in the family archives. The letters written by Pope Adrian IV and Pope Alexander III refer to a bequest by Scottish knight Walter de Ridale deeding lands in Lilliesleaf and Teviotdale, Roxburghshire, Scotland to his brother Ansketill. Scottish Kings David I and Malcolm IV are also referred to within the documents. Topics considered include Anglo-Norman settlements in Scotland, charter diplomatic in Scotland, and the 1887 publication of the letters by Cadwallader John Bates.
