- Abstract
The article focuses on China's foreign policy towards the U.S. during the administration of Chinese supreme leader Mao Zedong during the 1970s. The author considers the shifting political doctrines of Mao during the seventies, noting that his communist ideals were tempered by his pragmatic approach to international relations. The reasons behind Mao's 1972 meeting with U.S. President Richard M. Nixon is explored. Other subjects include Mao's theory of three worlds, the balance of power during the Cold War, and China's national security.
