- Abstract
Have the Free Churches been overlooked in the process of researching the history of Protestantism in the GDR? In any event, mutual approaches between the Free Churches and the established Church took place, not least because of the political circumstances. On the other hand, the Free Churches were and are the subject of research, above all in the context of the Free Churches themselves, which face the challenge of coming to terms with the past. Debates on this question took and take place in different ways in the various free churches, and meet with different responses. What is lacking up to the current time is a common Protestant perspective on the history of Protestantism in the GDR, and the established Protestant church history really should contribute more to this. This is because established Protestantism has been rather self-absorbed since 1989 and occupied with doing research on its own history and organisation. In a comparative perspective, it should be taken into account that the Protestant »Landeskirchen,« for their part, did not have a consistent attitude towards the state, and that consent, on the one hand, and dissent, on the other hand, could be found within their boundaries.
