- Title
Pilgrims and Martyrs: The Engraved Title Page of Ephrata's Martyrs Mirror.
- Abstract
The article examines the title page of the book "Martyrs Mirror," which was translated and printed by members of the Ephrata Community in colonial Pennsylvania. According to the author, the image is a pictorial allegory for the Ephrata Community's understanding of Christian life, and may have been created by engraver Michael Eben. Particular focus is given to themes of suffering and martyrdom in the image and their relationship to community members' own experiences of asceticism and celibacy. Details related to depictions of Jesus, worldly pleasures, baptism and torture in the engraving are presented. Other topics include eagles, lambs, and the number seven.
