- Abstract
The overall aim of this publication is to present the pattern of women's involvement in political life in Poland, as the representative country of the north-eastern Europe. This compilation focuses on women's involvement in local politics in comparison with the involvement at the central level (for example in the Parliament). Political involvement and active participation in politics of women in the north-eastern Europe has not been a subject of great scientific research yet, while the genesis of women's participation in politics dates back to the end of the nineteenth century. At that time, any woman actively participating in politics, would be considered as a great phenomenon; for many centuries, the dominant role model for women comprised duties connected with upraising children and running the households. Western Europe served as the example to follow, in developing and implementing social and gender rights, for women inhabiting the north-eastern parts of Europe. Starting as soon as in the beginning of the twentieth century, Polish female activists proclaimed prolific cooperation with feminists from Western Europe, and they underlined the idea of cooperation with other European gender organisations, and the need of transferring feminist movements and ideas into Polish reality. After Polish women had gained their voting rights in 1918, a greater women's interest and access to politics was observed, although this political privilege did not automatically mean active participation and commitment in political matters. As it was in the past and is at present, women, especially at the local level, mostly tend to represent the conservative political views. The conclusion states that the representation of women in the north-eastern politics is at low level, mainly due to the cultural and social factors, assigning women with family activities and presenting public or political activities as of secondary importance.
