- Abstract
The article discusses the history of the Moselle Furnace ironworks in Franklin County, Missouri, which was run by the firm Evans, Nuckolls & Company. Topics include problems with shipping products on the Meramec River, the debt accumulated by the firm, and the formation of partnerships in relation to a hostile takeover of the ironworks. Also addressed are the hiring and laying off of workers at the furnace, the nature of business enterprise failures in nineteenth-century Missouri, and the impact of the iron market on the furnace's fortunes.
