- Title
Towards Ruskin through Proust.
- Authors
Gervais, David
- Abstract
The article explores the attitude of French novelist and critic Marcel Proust toward the thoughts and life of art critic John Rushkin. Proust considered Rushkin a writer and not a bearer of out-dated traumas. It is noted that Proust did not hesitate to expose the habit of Rushkin to turn his aesthetic objects into idols or fetishes in themselves. It is suggested that Proust's sustained immersion in another mind over time epitomized his discovery of Rushkin, which involved trying to learn a foreign language.
