- Title
The "Anti-Marriage Theory" of Thomas and Mary Gove Nichols.
- Authors
CLINE COHEN, PATRICIA
- Abstract
The essay discusses the anti-monogamy and free love theories of sexual radicals Mary Gove Nichols and Thomas Low Nichols in the mid-19th century U.S. Focus is given to the way in which both figures supported women's rights regarding sex, which was arguably novel for the time, as well as their criticism of state involvement in controlling sexuality. Also explored is Gove's tenuous relationship with other women rights activists, such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
