Other fetal or maternal disorders.
- Abstract
The article reports that elevated levels of maternal serum AFP have, been found in other congenital abnormalities such as congenital nephrosis, congenital esophageal atresia, and fetal hydrocephaly. Before the 13th week the maternal AFP levels have been above the non-pregnant level in about 50% of normal pregnancies and in 30% of threatened abortion, but after the 13th week of gestation abortion occurred more frequently (10 of 12) in women with an abnormally high serum AFP concentration than in those (2 of 12) with an AFP within the normal range.
