- Abstract
Scientific publications in the winter of 2023 focused on mapping the genetic, molecular, and cellular aspects of human development. One study examined the cellular mapping of brain development during the first trimester, while another presented a three-dimensional atlas of the human head. These studies provide valuable insights into human growth and potential implications for treating developmental disorders. However, ethical concerns arise regarding the source of the specimens used in these studies, as they were obtained from voluntary abortions. The Catholic Church emphasizes the respect and dignity of human remains, and while scientific research with human tissues is not opposed in principle, the use of aborted remains for research is considered morally problematic. Other studies in the same field have explored ethical methods of studying human development, such as using consented human remains or non-invasive techniques like ultrasound. Respecting the dignity of the human person should be the primary concern in scientific research.
