- Abstract
Introdução: A periodontite apical e o tabagismo podem estar associados com a síndrome metabólica, diabetes mellitus e resistência insulínica. A melatonina possui propriedades antioxidantes e anti-inflamatórias. Estudos mostram que a melatonina melhora a sensibilidade à insulina e sinalização insulínica no músculo esquelético de ratos com periodontite apical. Objetivos: Objetivou-se avaliar a glicemia, insulinemia e índice HOMA-IR de ratos adultos com periodontite apical submetidos à inalação passiva da fumaça do cigarro. Material e método: Este trabalho foi analisado e aprovado pelo CEUA (processo FOA no 0204-2021). Utilizou-se 128 ratos Wistar com 60 dias de idade distribuídos em 8 grupos: controle (CN); ratos tabagistas (T); ratos com periodontite apical (AP); ratos tabagistas com periodontite apical (T+AP); controle com uso de melatonina (CN+MEL); ratos tabagistas suplementados com melatonina (T+MEL); ratos com periodontite apical suplementados com melatonina (AP+MEL); ratos tabagistas com periodontite apical suplementados com melatonina (T+AP+MEL). Os grupos tabagistas receberam à inalação passiva de cigarro durante 50 dias e no 20° dia, os grupos com periodontite apical foram submetidos à indução da periodontite apical e os animais dos grupos melatonina foram suplementados com melatonina do 20° dia até 50° dia. A normalidade dos dados foi avaliada pelo teste de ShapiroWilk, sendo utilizado ANOVA three way com pós teste de Tukey para análise estatística, com nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: Como resultado o grupo T+AP apresentou aumento na glicemia quando comparado aos grupos CN, CN+MEL, AP+MEL e T+MEL. Em relação à insulinemia e ao índice HOMA-IR, foram observadas diferenças estatisticamente significantes do grupo T+AP quando comparado aos demais grupos avaliados. Conclusão: Conclui-se que a suplementação com melatonina reverteu o processo de hiperglicemia.
