- Abstract
Introduction and Objectives: Fear and anxiety are the primary emotions in children, which need consideration during the dental management of children, especially children with special health care needs. They are at a higher risk of poor oral health due to their inability to communicate or inadequate oral health education. Therefore, dental treatment portrays a potential threat to the child, which can induce stress, fear, and anxiety. Various techniques have been used in literature for the assessment of dental anxiety and its reduction, but scanty literature is available in terms of anxiety management in children with hearing and speech disabilities. Hence, the study attempts to evaluate the effect of fidget spinner and kaleidoscope as distraction techniques on dental anxiety among children with hearing and speech disabilities. Objectives: To evaluate and compare the effectiveness of distraction techniques on dental anxiety among hearing and speech-disabled children. Methodology with Study Design: It is a cross-sectional study. Thirty children with hearing and speech disabilities aged 6-12 years will be selected and randomly divided into three groups (n = 10). Children with Group 1 will receive no distraction, and Group 2 and Group 3 will receive distraction using a fidget spinner and kaleidoscope, respectively. The anxiety levels will be measured using Prathima, Jaikiran, Sanguida's-Pictorial Scale and physiological parameters - pulse rate before and after a dental procedure. Inter-group comparison will be done. Results: Results are yet to be determined. Conclusion: Conclusion will be drawn after the analysis of results.
